The Indian National Congress had been founded a little more than ten years prior, and this year, at the momentous Lucknow session, the first party constitution was drafted. In 1899, Mahatma Gandhi was in South Africa spearheading a campaign against efforts to disenfranchise the Indian community there. Dadabhai Naoroji was two years away from publishing his Poverty and Un-British Rule in India. Bal Gangadhar Tilak had made his now-famous claim that Swaraj should be a birthright.

Founded in 1917 by the great educationist and philanthropist, Rai Kedar Nath, Ramjas College is one of the oldest colleges of Delhi. In 1951, on the occasion of its Silver Jubilee, the Commercial College decided to specialize in the field of commerce and economics and hence rechristened itself as Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) in recognition of the contribution made by its founder Sir Shri Ram. Three years later, in 1954, the College shifted completely to its present day campus in the North Campus, University of Delhi.

Hansraj College, a constituent college of the University of Delhi, was established on 26 July 1948 by the D.A.V. College Managing Committee in memory of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati and Mahatma Hansraj. Kirori Mal College (KMC), established in 1954, stands as a premier constituent college of the University of Delhi located in the North Campus. Gargi College is a women’s public college in New Delhi, India, affiliated to the University of Delhi. It was established in 1967 and has since grown into one of the well-known colleges under DU’s South Campus. The college is named after Gargi Vachaknavi, an enlightened philosopher from the Vedic era known for her intelligence, boldness, and spirit of inquiry as described in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad.

The desire to share knowledge and the dream to make education accessible to all brought together three visionaries, Smt. Durgabai Deshmukh, Shri K. L. Rao, and Shri C. Anna Rao, in the early decades of India’s independence. The foundation stone of the present-day campus in Dhaula Kuan was laid in the same year by eminent Indian philosopher and statesman Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Since then, the Upanishadic principle “Truth through self-education” has been the guiding principle in all our endeavors. Thus began our journey in shaping sensitive, balanced global citizens of tomorrow whose heart is cultured in indigenous values and mind is sharpened in critical thinking. The college relentlessly pursued the ideals set by founders and has taken pride in creating a holistic learning atmosphere for students from diverse backgrounds at a minimum cost in the national capital for more than six decades.
