BREAKING News: CBI cracks NEET UG 2026 leak

The integrity of competitive examinations like the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) is paramount for millions of aspiring medical professionals. Recent reports concerning a potential NEET UG 2026 paper leak have understandably sent ripples of concern and anxiety through the student community, their parents, and educators nationwide.

Such incidents not only undermine the hard work of diligent students but also cast a shadow over the sanctity of the entire examination system.

In the wake of these distressing developments, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken swift and decisive action, initiating a thorough investigation into the alleged NEET UG 2026 paper leak. This proactive intervention by a premier investigative agency is a crucial step towards upholding justice and restoring faith in the examination process.

The Scale of the Crisis

ParameterDetail
Exam DateMay 3, 2026
Total CandidatesApproximately 22 lakh (2.2 million)
Exam Centers (India)551 cities
Overseas Centers14 countries
First Leak Input ReceivedMay 7, 2026 (4 days post-exam)
Exam Cancellation DateMay 12, 2026

Financial & Human Impact

  • NTA Organizing Cost: Approximately Rs 20 Crore
  • Fees Collected: Approximately Rs 30 Crore
  • Refund Status: Full refunds promised to all candidates
  • Tragic Loss: A 21-year-old dropper student, Hritik Mishra from Uttar Pradesh, allegedly died by suicide following the cancellation. This was his third attempt at NEET.

"The cancellation of the exam has devastated honest students who prepared for years. The CBI's fast action is the only silver lining."

Main Accused Identified

The CBI registered an FIR on May 12, 2026 based on a complaint from the Department of Higher Education. Within 72 hours, the agency cracked the case and identified the kingpin.

The Kingpin: Prof. P. V. Kulkarni

  • Full Name: Shri P. V. Kulkarni
  • Profession: Chemistry Lecturer
  • Hometown: Latur (currently based in Pune)
  • Role in NTA: "Domain Expert"
  • Date of Arrest: May 15, 2026

How He Operated:

  1. Held exclusive "special classes" at his Pune residence during the last week of April 2026.
  2. Allegedly dictated questions, options, and correct answers directly to a small group of students.
  3. Students paid "several lakhs of rupees" for access.
  4. Handwritten notes seized by the CBI show the dictated questions "exactly tallied" with the May 3 exam paper.

This is a significant shift from the 2024 leak case. For the first time, an insider from the paper-setting committee has been arrested.

The Chain of Conspiracy (How the Paper Spread)

The CBI uncovered a multi-state distribution network that spread the paper across India for money.

Hierarchical Breakdown

1. The Source (Pune)

  • Prof. P. V. Kulkarni dictates the paper to students.

2. The Distributors (Maharashtra)

  • Manisha Waghmare (Beautician, Pune)
  • Dhananjay Lokhande (Ayurveda practitioner, Ahilyanagar)

3. The Digital Circulators (Nashik to Gurugram)

  • Shubham Khairnar (Nashik) received PDFs.
  • Yash Yadav (Gurugram) received and forwarded digital copies.
  • Evidence: PDF copies circulated via Telegram as early as April 24.

4. The Brokers & Buyers (Jaipur)

  • Mangilal Biwal (along with sons Vikas and Dinesh) purchased the paper for Rs 10-12 lakh to secure admission for a family member.
  • They further distributed printed copies to other aspirants.
