CAT 2026 Syllabus: Section-Wise Topics and Weightage
The CAT 2026 syllabus covers three major sections: Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). While IIMs do not prescribe a fixed topic-wise syllabus or guaranteed weightage, previous CAT papers provide a useful indication of the topics and question types candidates can expect. This guide covers the CAT 2026 syllabus, important topics, expected weightage, preparation priorities, CAT cutoffs, top MBA colleges, fees, placements and college selection in one place.
CAT 2026 Syllabus at a Glance

| QA | Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Number System, Modern Math | Percentages, profit & loss, ratios, averages, equations, geometry, numbers, probability |
CAT 2026 VARC Syllabus: Topics and Expected Weightage
VARC generally requires strong reading ability, comprehension, inference and verbal reasoning. Reading Comprehension has historically formed the largest part of the section, making regular reading and timed RC practice important.
| VARC Topic | Expected Question Range | Priority |

- Logical flow of paragraphs
CAT 2026 preparation tip: Do not prepare VARC only through grammar rules. Build reading speed, comprehension accuracy and the ability to eliminate incorrect options.
CAT 2026 DILR Syllabus: Topics and Expected Weightage
DILR combines numerical interpretation with logical decision-making. The section can vary considerably between slots, so candidates should practise different set types rather than preparing only a fixed list of formulas.
| DILR Area | Important Topics | Expected Importance |
| Data Interpretation | Tables, bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts, caselets | Very High |
| Logical Reasoning | Arrangements, distribution, selection, grouping | Very High |
| Games & Tournaments | Matches, rankings, points, scheduling | High |
| Routes & Networks | Routes, connections, paths | Medium–High |
| Venn Diagrams | Sets and overlapping groups | Medium |
| Quant-Based DI | Ratios, percentages, averages, calculations | High |
Important DILR Topics for CAT 2026
- Tables and caselets
- Bar graphs
- Line graphs
- Pie charts
- Data comparison
- Arrangements
- Distribution
- Selection
- Games and tournaments
- Scheduling
- Rankings
- Routes and networks
- Venn diagrams
- Logical conditions
The most useful DILR preparation approach is to practise complete sets under time pressure and learn how to identify which sets are worth attempting first.
CAT 2026 Quantitative Aptitude Syllabus: Topics and Weightage
QA covers several areas of school-level mathematics, with Arithmetic and Algebra generally forming a substantial part of CAT preparation.
| QA Topics | Important Subtopic | Expected Importance |
| Arithmetic | Percentages, Profit & Loss, Ratio, Average, Time-Speed-Distance, Time & Work | Very High |
| Algebra | Equations, inequalities, functions, sequences, quadratic equations | Very High |
| Geometry | Triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, coordinate geometry | High |
| Number System | Divisibility, remainders, factors, HCF & LCM | High |
| Modern Mathematics | Probability, permutation & combination, set theory | Medium |
| Mensuration | Area, volume and surface area | Medium |
Most Important QA Topics for CAT 2026
Arithmetic:
Percentages, ratios, averages, mixtures, profit & loss, simple and compound interest, time-speed-distance and time & work.
Algebra:
Linear equations, quadratic equations, inequalities, functions, sequences and algebraic expressions.
Geometry:

CAT 2026 Syllabus: Section-Wise Preparation Priority
| Section | Key Focus | Preparation Approach |
| VARC | RC + Verbal Ability | Daily reading + RC practice + timed VA |
| DILR | Set selection + accuracy | Practise mixed sets + analyse failed sets |
| QA | Arithmetic + Algebra | Concept building + sectional tests |
| Overall CAT | Speed + accuracy | Full-length mocks + detailed analysis |
The objective should not be to attempt every question. CAT performance depends on choosing questions carefully, maintaining accuracy and managing time across sections.
CAT 2026 Cutoff: What Percentile Should You Target?
CAT percentile requirements vary significantly across IIMs and other MBA colleges. Also, a minimum qualifying cutoff is not the same as the actual percentile at which candidates receive interview calls. For example, IIM Bangalore explicitly notes that the scores of candidates called for interviews were higher than the published minimum first-shortlist cutoffs.
| Target CAT Percentile | MBA Colleges / Institutes to Explore |
| 99+ Percentile | IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, FMS Delhi and other highly competitive B-schools |
| 97–99 Percentile | IIMs, IIT MBA programmes, FMS and leading non-IIM B-schools depending on profile |
| 95–97 Percentile | Newer IIMs, IITs and leading private B-schools |
| 90–95 Percentile | Several IIMs/non-IIM B-schools, depending on category and profile |
| 80–90 Percentile | Multiple private B-schools and selected MBA programmes |
| 70–80 Percentile | Private MBA colleges and other management institutes accepting CAT |
Important: These are broad target ranges, not guaranteed admission cutoffs. Category, sectional percentile, academic record, work experience and institute-specific selection criteria can materially affect shortlisting.

Top IIMs Accepting CAT 2026
The CAT is the principal entrance examination used by the IIMs for their flagship management programmes for domestic applicants. Individual IIMs use their own admission policies after considering CAT performance and other profile/selection components. For example, IIM Ahmedabad's PGP admission process includes CAT followed by the institute's shortlisting, analytical writing and personal interview process.
| IIM | Programme | CAT Relevance | Key Admission Consideration |
| IIM Ahmedabad | PGP / MBA | CAT | CAT + academics + AWT/PI and other criteria |
| IIM Bangalore | PGP / MBA | CAT | CAT + academics + PI and other components |
| IIM Calcutta | MBA | CAT | CAT + academic profile + selection process |
| IIM Lucknow | MBA | CAT | CAT + profile + selection criteria |
| IIM Kozhikode | PGP | CAT | CAT + academics + selection criteria |
| IIM Indore | PGP | CAT | CAT + academics + selection criteria |
| IIM Mumbai | MBA | CAT | CAT + institute-specific selection criteria |
| IIM Shillong | MBA | CAT | CAT + institute-specific selection process |
| IIM Udaipur | MBA | CAT | CAT + institute-specific selection process |
| IIM Trichy | MBA | CAT | CAT + institute-specific selection process |
Top MBA Colleges Accepting CAT 2026
CAT is not limited to IIM admissions. Several leading non-IIM institutions also use CAT scores as part of their MBA/PGDM admission process.
| MBA College | Type | Approx. CAT Target Range | Major Consideration |
| FMS Delhi | University B-school | 98–99+ | CAT + selection process |
| SPJIMR Mumbai | Private B-school | 95–98+ | CAT + profile + selection |
| MDI Gurgaon | Private B-school | 95–97+ | CAT + institute criteria |
| IIFT | Public B-school | 95–98+ | CAT + institute criteria |
| IMT Ghaziabad | Private B-school | 90–95+ | CAT + selection process |

| GIM Goa | Private B-school | 85–95+ | CAT + profile |
| TAPMI Manipal | Private B-school | 85–95+ | CAT + selection criteria |
| FORE School of Management | Private B-school | 85–95+ | CAT + institute criteria |
| Great Lakes Institute of Management | Private B-school | 85–95+ | CAT + profile/selection |
Percentile ranges are indicative target ranges, not guaranteed admission cutoffs. Actual shortlisting can vary by year, category, academic profile, work experience and institute-specific criteria.
CAT MBA Colleges: Fees and Average Placement
When comparing MBA colleges, candidates should look beyond the CAT cutoff. Programme fee, average salary, median salary, location, curriculum, recruiter mix and career opportunities can all influence the overall value of an MBA.
| Institute | Approx. Programme Fee | Average Placement / Salary Indicator | Category |
| IIM Ahmedabad | ₹26–27 lakh range | Latest official placement report | IIM |
| IIM Bangalore | ₹26 lakh | ₹35.35 lakh average salary | IIM |
| IIM Calcutta | Institute-specific | Latest official MBA placement report | IIM |
| FMS Delhi | Very low compared with most premier B-schools | Latest official placement report | University B-school |
| SPJIMR Mumbai | ₹20–25 lakh range | Latest placement report | Private |
| MDI Gurgaon | ₹20–25 lakh range | Latest placement report | Private |
| IIFT Delhi/Kolkata | ₹20–25 lakh range | Latest placement report | Public |
| IMT Ghaziabad | ₹18–22 lakh range | Latest placement report | Private |
| IMI Delhi | ₹18–20 lakh range | Latest placement report | Private |
| GIM Goa | ₹18–20 lakh range | Latest placement report | Private |
*Fees can change by batch and may exclude deposits, mess, personal expenses, taxes or other charges. Always verify the latest fee structure from the institute before applying.
For reference, IIM Bangalore lists the PGP 2026–28 domestic programme fee at ₹26 lakh for two years, excluding applicable taxes and certain additional expenses. Its 2026 placement report reports an average salary of ₹35.35 lakh and median salary of ₹34.75 lakh for the PGP + PGPBA 2024–26 cohort.
IIM Ahmedabad reported that all students participating in its 2025–26 final placement process were placed across 26 cohorts, with recruiters spanning technology, banking, finance, consulting and analytics.
How to Choose MBA Colleges After CAT 2026?
A high CAT percentile does not automatically mean that one particular college is the right choice. Candidates should compare colleges across multiple parameters.
| Parameter | What You Should Compare |
| CAT Cutoff | Minimum and realistic shortlist percentile |
| Fees | Total programme cost + hostel/mess and other expenses |
| Placements | Average/median salary, sectors and roles |
| ROI | Placement outcomes relative to total education cost |
| Admission Criteria | CAT + academics + work experience + PI/WAT or other components |
| Location | Industry ecosystem and career opportunities |
| Programme | MBA/PGDM structure, specialisations and electives |
| Career Goals | Consulting, finance, marketing, product, analytics, HR, operations etc. |

CAT 2026 Syllabus: How Should You Prepare?
A practical CAT 2026 preparation plan should combine concept building, topic-wise practice, sectional tests and full-length mocks.
| Preparation Stage | What to Do |
| Foundation | Complete Arithmetic, Algebra, RC and basic DILR concepts |
| Practice | Solve topic-wise questions and previous CAT papers |
| Sectional Practice | Take timed VARC, DILR and QA tests |
| Mock Phase | Take full-length CAT mocks regularly |
| Analysis | Analyse every incorrect, unattempted and guessed question |
| Final Revision | Focus on accuracy, question selection and time management |
The most important mistake to avoid is measuring preparation only by the number of questions solved. Mock analysis and understanding why questions were missed can be as important as taking the mock itself.

FAQFrequently Asked Questions
Q: Does the CAT 2026 syllabus change every year?
No, the official syllabus does not change, but the difficulty level and the weightage of specific topics (like Algebra vs. Arithmetic) vary annually.
Q: What is the minimum percentile for IIM calls?
While top IIMs require 98.5+ percentile for General candidates, many new IIMs and category students can get calls at 85-92 percentile.
Q: Is work experience mandatory for CAT 2026?
No, freshers can apply and are regularly selected. However, many IIMs award extra points for 2-3 years of quality work experience during the final selection.
Q: Which is the most difficult section in CAT?
Historically, aspirants find DILR the most challenging due to its unpredictable nature and the time-pressure of solving complex sets.
Q: Is there an official CAT 2026 syllabus?
IIMs do not generally publish a fixed chapter-wise CAT syllabus. The examination broadly covers VARC, DILR and QA, while topic-level preparation is based on previous CAT papers and established question patterns.
Q: What are the three sections in CAT 2026?
The three sections are Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA).
Q: Which topics are most important in CAT QA?
Arithmetic and Algebra are important preparation areas, followed by Geometry, Number System and selected Modern Mathematics topics.
Q: Is Reading Comprehension important for CAT 2026?
Yes. RC forms a substantial part of VARC, so candidates should develop reading comprehension, inference and option-elimination skills.
Q: Does a high CAT percentile guarantee an IIM admission?
No. IIMs use institute-specific selection processes. CAT percentile is an important component, but academic record, category, work experience, interviews and other selection factors can also influence the final outcome. IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore, for example, publish detailed selection methodologies rather than using CAT percentile alone.
Q: Which colleges can I get with my CAT percentile?
Your options depend on overall percentile, sectional percentile, category, academic profile, work experience and the admission criteria of individual institutes. Check your CAT college options with the MatchToCollege CAT College Predictor https://matchtocollege.com/tools/cat-college-predictor
